Salvator Rosa, 1645
(Italian, 1615-1673)
A painter, printmaker, poet and actor, Rosa was one of the least conventional artists of 17th-century Italy, and was later adopted as a hero by painters of the Romantic movement. He was mainly a painter of landscapes, but the range of his subject matter included portraits, allegories and scenes of witchcraft. His interest in the irrational and less conventional preoccupations of his age also formed the background to his etchings and his satires. via
